Paul's letter to the Colossians weaves together high theology with holy living, and exhortations with warnings. Its main theme is the fullness of Christ, and the fullness that Christians have in him. Christ's person and work are complete, and Christians have benefited from this completeness. Any attempt to supplement or replace the person and work of Christ therefore undermines and devalues him, and compromises the Christian faith. This commentary confronts several controversial doctrines, including the incomprehensibility of God and the origin of sin and evil. Other features include a summary of systematic theology from the perspective of christology, discussions on true versus false philosophy, true versus false spirituality, what it means to see the Father by "looking at" Jesus, the priorities of Paul in life and prayer, and the true nature of the Great Commission.

I stumbled across Vincent Cheung while scrolling through the search hits on Amazon's Kindle store. I never heard of him before. But the ratings were pretty good and the Kindle edition was reasonably priced so I took a chance. Cheung is a little caustic and abrasive here and there, but I happen to like "hard preaching." He does seem to have a good handle on Paul's letter to the Colossians. He believes Colossians is one of those biblical documents that can deliver its message without a commanding knowledge of the circumstances under which Paul wrote. In other words, the reader needn't bother spending inordinate time sifting through the Gnostic heresies of the second century under the misguided notion that Colossians was addressed to Christians falling under the influence of early Gnostic philosophers. Personally, I think he's right. As I write this review, I haven't read Cheung's entire book. But I'm sufficiently impressed thus far.I've read much more of this book since my initial review, and I've lowered my initial rating. Cheung is far less interested in the message of Colossians than in articulating his over-the-top invective against some respectable theologians and scholars. His tone is needlessly caustic. After the first several pages of helpful commentary he leaves off the biblical text of Colossians and goes on a foolish rampage of unkind criticism of others he disagrees with. I grew more disgusted with his tone the more I read, and I am genuinely sorry I lined his pockets with my gold--though thankfully not a lot of my gold. If a prospective reader wants a good example of egotistical grand-standing, this is it. If it's a well-reasoned theological exposition of Colossians that you seek, this book will be a very disappointing investment of your time and money.
